Advanced WordPress Hosting and Maintenance

Does your website use any custom code? Does it use plugins which need regular updates? Does it have any code snippets or hooks? Struggling with website performance, caching, or reliability? If so, a traditional hosting company may not have the skills to get your site running at its best. That’s where we come in.

Tecture has decades of software development and hosting skills put into practice in our WordPress hosting solution. Running a healthy, fast, and secure WordPress website takes much more than clicking update on plugins. It means diagnosing and fixing plugin conflicts, communicating with other plugin developers to repair bugs, performing security patches and updates, tuning caching, and blocking malicious traffic and bots.

Unlike a traditional hosting company, Tecture provides you with a direct line to our US-based developers. Not level 1 support. Real developers with plugin development experience.

Why Tecture? Three reasons.

  • We know how to get the maximum performance out of WordPress.
  • We are expert plugin developers, which means we know the backend of WordPress inside and out, and know the architecture. When something goes wrong, we know exactly where to look and how to fix it.
  • We are so serious about security that we made a security plugin to blocks bots and malicious traffic. It’s free and open source.

There are several layers to caching:

  • PHP opcache tuning, which is where compiled PHP is cached. This requires tuning cache size, memory, and number of strings.
  • Object caching, which WordPress and many plugins leverage to improve performance by reducing unnecessary database calls. Redis is our preferred solution.
  • Page caching. Static or infrequently changing pages can be stored on disk or in memory. Transactional or dynamic pages cannot be cached.
  • File caching, in which client web browsers are encouraged to cache images, css, javascript, and other types of files. Depending on the site traffic, we can configure a content delivery network (CDN).

Database performance is essential to good WordPress website performance.

If your site includes custom database tables, or makes extensive use of user meta or post meta, you likely have performance issues with certain queries. Our SQL tuning service can include the following:

  • Installation of indexes to improve query performance
  • Writing new queries or joins to improve performance or reduce duplicate queries
  • Cron-based materialized views to cache slow queries into caching tables
  • Use of object caching

Some 3rd party plugins have poor underlying SQL queries. We can diagnose these poor-performing queries and can sometimes improve their performance with indexes. When not possible, we can contact the developers to request changes, or can determine alternative plugins.

Plugins must be updated routinely. With our service, we perform manual plugin updates, not automated, as we inspect websites after updating to look for errors or conflicts. Since plugins connect with WordPress and one another using hooks, and those hooks can change without warning, any site that relies on connections between plugins must be carefully maintained. Tecture contacts 3rd party plugin developers if and when plugins break, providing technical details they need to fix bugs and errors.

WordPress and its community of robust plugins make for a highly extensible platform on which to build the front end of your business. The power of WordPress are its hooks: actions and filters. These allow you to customize virtually any aspect of your website.

Perhaps you had a developer build a custom theme or plugin for you, and you need it modified or maintained. Or, you used some code snippets you found online or had AI generate for you. Regardless, hooks change over time. LLMs are often trained on outdated versions of documentation and thus can’t always help when hooks fail. That’s where we step in. We can uncover the reason hooks aren’t working, dig into the code, and get it fixed.

Migrating data into and out of WordPress can be a challenge due to the wide range of data storage formats and table structures. Data ranges from metadata to custom tables, and can be stored serialized. We know and can reverse engineer storage mechanisms used by plugins and can either find solutions or write importers. If you have data to import, maintain, or clean up, we can do it.

Examples of imports:

  • Data transfer of historical orders from old ecommerce system into WooCommerce
  • Data transfer of course credits in Uncanny Toolkit for Learndash
  • Data transfer tool to extract community data from Higher Logic and import into BuddyBoss

Few modern sites are stand-alone. Most sites we work on include connections to 3rd party services, either via APIs or by connections made with plugins. These include:

  • CRM systems like Salesforce, Pipedrive, or Zoho
  • Email marketing systems like MailChimp
  • SSO integrations with AWS Cognito or Keycloak
  • AWS services such as Lambda, Cognito, or S3
